It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Easy DIY Mason Jar Soap Dispenser

Materials:

  • A mason jar with lid
  • An old plastic soap dispenser (just the cheap ones you buy anywhere)
  • Liquid soap
  • Hot glue gun
  • Drill (drill press is preferable if you have access to one, but not necessary)
  • Hole saw (size depends on the diameter of your soap dispenser’s threads)
  • Hobby/box-cutting knife
  • A round metal file
  • Sharpie or other marker
  • Awl or ice pick
  • Clamp of some sort (to keep the mason jar lid from spinning when you drill the hole in it)

Directions:

  • Remove the lids on the mason jar and soap dispenser.  Clean out the soap dispenser and it’s pump.
  • Mark the center of the mason jar lid where you will drill the hole.
  • Look at your soap dispenser bottle neck to see how big you will need to make the hole select the correct size drill bit.  (You will later be cutting off the top of the bottle, putting it through the underside of the lid and gluing it there so that your pump will screw back onto it’s original home.)
  • Use your awl or ice pick to make a dent where you will be drilling.
  • Clamp the lid securely to prevent it from spinning while you drill.
  • Using a drill or a drill press drill the hole into the lid.  (If you don’t have a drill handy you can actually make this hole just by poking a scissors though the lid and shimmying it around until you have the correct size hole.  The hole will not be as round and perfect as with the drill, but you won’t see it so it’s ok to do it this way.
  • Use a file to get rid of the rough edges of the freshly made hole.
  • Using your box-cutter, cut off the top of the soap bottle.  Save enough plastic around the base of the neck so you have somewhere to put hot glue when you glue it to the underside of the mason jar lid.
  • Feed the neck of the soap bottle through the underside of the mason jar lid and use hot glue to secure it to the bottom.  Like so:

  • Let dry fully.
  • Screw on the pump.  You can use a rubber washer to make a better seal.
  • Add soap, screw on the lid and there you have it!
