It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Easy and CHEAP DIY Solar Pool Heater

Here is what you will need for each panel and you will be making 3-5 depending on your pool size:

  • 4 2′ lengths of PVC pipe
  • 4 90 degree elbows
  • 6 mm black plastic
  • pipe insulation
  • duct tape
  • PVC glue

Directions:

  • Using your PVC glue, glue the elbows to the 2′ PVC so that you assemble a square frame.
  • Lay out the black plastic over the frame and cut a piece about 4-6″ larger than the frame.
  • Wrap your square plastic around the frame and attach it temporarily with the duct tape.
  • Repeat 3-4 times so that you have 5 of these square panels.
  • To attach the foam pipe for insulation, cut the pieces to attach to the perimeter of the PVC all the way around.  Peel off the adhesive  strip covering and seal them on each side.
  • Now you want to burn holes along the inside edge of the plastic.  You will be using these the attach the wire ties to the foam.
  • Thread the wire ties through the holes and attach to the PVC.
  • Clip the ends of the wire ties.

There you have it!

If you want to add some extra power to this solar heater, get a hold of an old black hose and find a water source to attach it to (such as the water source for the slide if you have one).  Coil the hose and lay it on the panel while it is in the water and let the water run slowly though it. (You can wire tie it down as well.)  The hose will heat up and the warm water will trickle into the pool throughout the heat of the day.
