It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

This Nasty Solution Of Vinegar And Steel Wool Can Do BEAUTIFUL THINGS!

OXIDIZING SOLUTION

Ingredients:

  • Grade #0000 steel wool
  • Vinegar
  • Jar with a METAL lid (won’t work with plastic!)

Directions:

  1. Take a big chunk of steel wool and tear it up into pieces.  Put it in the jar and fill the vinegar to the top.
  2. Let the solution sit for a few days and shake it up ever once in a while.  The steel wool will start to dissolve and the vinegar will turn brown.
  3. Try applying it

If the solution sits for a while, like a few weeks, it will start to get concentrated and may impart a color to your wood that is darker than you want.  If this is the case, you can simply dilute it with more vinegar.  You can continue to do this as you use it until it is gone.

Check out how beautifully it stains wood!

  1. I tried doing this, and, after a month still had no difference in the vinegar. I made sure my jar had a metal lid too.
