First she sanded it down and primed it with an oil-based primer. She recommends always priming with oil-based primers if you are working with something that has been heavily varnished.
Another tip: When using oil-based primer, use cheap brushes and dispose of them after you finish priming. Much easier than dealing with mineral spirits.
Next, apply at least 2 coats of paint using a roller and/or brush. Spraying can lead to drips that can be very difficult to fix.
Lastly, she invested in really nice hardware and lined the inside with pretty wallpaper. Those are the details that make all the difference!
And voila!
A beautiful transformation!
