It's WISE to DIY: Thrify Ideas for the Do-It-Yourselfer

Use Water to Show How Much Propane Left in The Tank

It takes just a minute – here is what you need to do:

  1. Get a glass / cup of hot water.
  2. Pour it down one side of the tank.  This will heat up the parts of the tank it touches that are empty.
  3. Run your hand down the same side of the tank the water touched.  Where you feel the tank become cold – that is your propane line.
  4. Assuming you have a normal BBQ, one tank will last about 8 to 10 hours.  So if you judge that you have about one quarter left, then figure 2 – 2.5 hours left.
